Bella and the Need for Spin

Published on 16 February 2025 at 17:33

Meet Bella, the brown and white Border Collie who has a flair for spinning round at the sight and sound of Harrogates busy traffic, which is a fairly common behavioural issue for Border Collies. Bella’s lively spirit is undeniable, but her fear of the busy Harrogate roads can lead to bouts of dizzying circles that leave her more disoriented than a compass with a missing needle. Her owner Chris quickly realized that something had to be done to help Bella overcome this anxious behaviour. That’s when we decided to employ positive reinforcement through her favourite thing in the world—treats!

Every day in this exotic (😬) weather we are having here in Harrogate 🥶, my dog walking sessions with Bella begin with a pocket full of treats and a heart full of patience. Gradually, as Bella gets more comfortable and receives treats for staying calm near traffic, her spinning episodes are becoming less frequent. It’s a journey that requires persistence and understanding, but the progress is palpable. Bella’s world is slowly but surely expanding beyond her initial fears, and with each step forward, Chris and I are closer to seeing her confidently stride past traffic without a second spin. This dedicated approach is a testament to the power of positive reinforcement and the loving bond between Bella, her owner and Ella at Cookies' Dog Walking.
